Big Field Basics is a new initiative in 2025. This program is designed to assist with bridging the gap between U10’s and U12’s.
Big Field Basics is an invite only program designed specifically for children who will step into U12’s in 2026 either by age or ability, or those who played their first year in U12’s in 2025 and need some additional knowledge to help them adapt. The coaches for each club have identified the children for this program.
The step up to U12’s is a significant leap in the kids hockey skill development and can sometimes be quite daunting. The field is bigger, the kids are bigger, more rules are implemented – it is a lot for a little person to take on.
Big Field Basics will provide a learning opportunity for the kids to better equip them with the knowledge they need to confidently step into U12’s.
The following will be covered in our 4 week program.
-Understanding Umpiring
oBasic signals
oStopping on the whistle
oWho’s free hit is it
-Long corners & 16 yard hits
oWhere to take them
oRules around them
-Penalty Corners – Attack and defence
oWhere to take them
oWho is involved
oRules around them
-Positioning
oBasic traditional positioning
oBasic role of position lines
We will work through each section of the program using fun games to try and establish knowledge and understanding. We will plan to finish off each week with a game, so the kids have an opportunity to put their newfound knowledge into practice.
